SELF Board of Directors Name Chief Executive Officer

The Schools Excess Liability Fund Board is pleased to announce the selection of Nathaniel E. Lord as SELF's new Chief Executive officer following a five-month, nation-wide search.

“I am delighted to welcome a risk management and insurance expert of Nat's caliber,” said SELF Board Chair Michael Gregoryk . “He will be an enormous asset to SELF and its members.”

Nat brings nearly 30 years of insurance and risk management experience to the position, and that, coupled with seven years spent as an elected school board member for Claremont Unified School District in Southern California , gives him a unique perspective on the job.

“As a Board member, I vividly remember the fiscal constraints constantly threatening the pursuit of excellence in the classroom,” he said. “Working in a collaborative spirit to provide quality capacity and coverage, responsive and responsible claims management and focused loss control and risk management services at the right price, will allow each of those member education agencies to focus on raising the bar for the children and students of California .”

Nat comes to SELF from the Pennsylvania-based AmerisourceBergen Corp., one of the largest pharmaceutical service companies in the United States , where he has served as Vice President of Risk Management since 2001. From 1993 to 2001, he was Vice President of Risk Management and Governmental Affairs at Bergen Brunswig Corp. in Orange , Calif. until the merger with Amerisource Health and the resulting formation of AmerisourceBergen Corp.

Born in Wilmington , Del. , he is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College , with degrees in history and political science. He holds a master's in business administration from the University of LaVerne and in 1983 earned his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.

Nat will take the reins March 12 from Interim Executive Director John Wilson, who returned to the JPA in July following the resignation of Tom Osborne.

Nat is excited to be a part of SELF's future and eager to take part in protecting California schools from catastrophic losses.
